Gallery: May 14, 2017 Kiefer Sutherland at Gruene Hall – New Braunfels, TX

The scene: A rustic barn-type venue in middle-of-nowhere North Texas called Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. A sold out crowd. This is clearly a toe-tapping, boot-scootin’ type party. The guest of honor: The Kiefer Sutherland Band. I’d familiarized myself with the album, “Down In a Hole” on the 4 hour drive down. After listening to it more than a few times (it’s pretty catchy), I found myself wanting to know if Mr. Sutherland was okay as there’s some pretty dark stuff on there. Then it hit me- Oh yeah- “Down In a Hole” and all. Makes sense!

I brushed some dust off my jeans and headed toward the stage, watching the band swagger their way across the fan-laden back entryway into the venue. Kiefer smiled and waved politely to his fans, who were all clamoring for a peak of the star actor turned musician. When he took the stage, he was clearly at home. You could tell that the anxiety and fear he mentioned having in his first few performances on stage, has long since vanished. The crowd knew all the words and was more enthusiastic with each song performed. “Truth in Your Eyes” may be my favorite cut, and with a short story he told the crowd “You are never alone. No matter how deep in a hole you go, there are people who love you. You’re just never alone”.

Just like that, I was a fan. Thank you, Kiefer, for the music. Keep it coming.
