After 20 years of silence, it’s safe to say that the idea of Pink Floyd, releasing another album was all but lost. Well, Pink Floyd fans, the good news is that good things come to those who wait, and after what feels like the longest wait in the history of music, the band has officially announced the release of a new album. The album, entitled ‘The Endless River’, will feature all new music and is scheduled for release on November 10th.
To call the songs on this album ‘new’ is a bit of an exaggeration. The 18 tracks that will be on ‘The Endless River’ will all be instrumental, with the exception of one, and were all recorded by David Gilmour, Nick Mason and the late Richard Wright. In 1993 the band spent countless hours booked in sessions at Division Hall and recorded over one hundred pieces of music, 18 of which were chosen to be on this album and finished by producer Bob Ezrin and multiple studio musicians. Gilmour and Mason did return to the studio to add some additional performances. A 24-page hard cover book with previously unseen photographs from the 1993 sessions will be included in each edition of the album. The album will also be available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
David Gilmour recently stated, “The Endless River has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 Division Bell sessions. We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album. Over the last year we’ve added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album. With Rick gone, and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right that these revisited and reworked tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire.”
Mason added, “The Endless River is a tribute to Rick. I think this record is a good way of recognizing a lot of what he does and how his playing was at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound. Listening back to the sessions, it really brought home to me what a special player he was.”
Gilmour’s wife, Polly Samson, has lyrics in the only song that features any vocals, ‘Louder Than Words’. The track was produced by Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Youth and Andy Jackson.
