October Sky Tour Diary – Boston, MA
It’s currently 2:20 a.m. Greetings from a truck stop in Connecticut!
It’s strange to think I’ve joined this tour 10 days ago, and tomorrow is my last show.
When I joined the tour, I didn’t know any of these guys. It’s weird being on the road with people you didn’t even know: Suddenly, you’re with them all day, every day. They see you at your best and they see you at your worst. They know when something’s off. They become a second family and some amazing friends.
It’s a bittersweet feeling for me with tomorrow being my last show. I wish I could finish the tour, but alas, my day job awaits for me.
The past few days we’ve been in Hamden, Conn. and Cambridge, Mass. Tomorrow is Lancaster, Pa.
Thankfully, we got to sleep in today, and I’m so happy that I actually slept the whole night through. It’s amazing what those few extra hours will do to you and how much better you end up feeling.
I feel so fortunate and thankful to have been able to share this experience with October Sky. I’ve learned so much about life on the road. I’ve realized that a lot of the time, people don’t realize what it actually is and how hard of a lifestyle it can be.
These guys are away from their families for months at a time. They live in a van or an RV and sleep at random truck stops to make it into the next city. They drive for hours on end. They load in heavy equipment day in and day out from shows.
They have to prepare for the unexpected and take every day as it comes. There’s really no set schedule expect knowing what venue they play at and as the day goes on they get time frames.
I give everyone on the “You Can’t Kill Us Tour” so many props and endless respect. They work their asses off day in and day out. They put on amazing shows every night, and they’re all so genuine and sweet. I feel fortunate and thankful to have this opportunity with an amazing crew who I’ve learned so much from this week.
Tonight the boys played in Boston. Personally, I consider Boston a second home so it’s always fun to be in Bean Town.
Today definitely didn’t go as we expected. We left Jersey around 11:30 a.m. thinking we’d have plenty of time to get to the venue by 5 p.m. for the boys’ sound check, but boy we were wrong.
The show started at 6:20 p.m. and because of the traffic and rain we showed up super late at 5:40 p.m. It was pouring and we still had to find parking and unload the equipment out of the RV.
While we were stuck in traffic, the boys got the equipment ready to be moved out as soon as we parked. We finally got to the venue and hauled ass. Thankfully the staff at the venue was amazing and helped us load and unload (thanks guys!). It’s amazing how a few extra hands and support really makes a difference.
Tonight was an early show so it was a really strange set up. The venue was weirdly shaped too so I ended up having to take down the merch where I had originally started to set up and had to share space with Assuming We Survive (thanks boys!).
It wasn’t an ideal situation, but we made it work. Tomorrow is my last show in Lancaster.
