Summer Camp – England, UK (Moshi Moshi)

Summer Camp are an English indie-pop band signed to Moshi Moshi and founded in 2009. Married couple Elizabeth Sankey and Jeremy Warmsley combine sunny, atmospheric pop with lyrics that dabble in failed relationships and what seems to be a general melancholy. Although they have been working now for four years, the band still has not seen the success they have deserved.

With their first full-length album, Welcome to Condale, the band brought a sound reminiscent of John Hughes movies. The stylized 80’s synth, hazy guitar riffs and pop vocals will have anyone interested in this electro-pop-with-a-heart bouncing up and down. If you like classic 80’s female artists like Blondie and Cyndi Lauper, but crave a more modern twist a la Diamond Rings or Twin Sister, you’ll fall in love with this dynamic duo.  Recently the band released their latest EP Summer Camp which definitely doesn’t fall into the “sophomore slump” category that most artists seem to suffer from.

Noted tracks include “Better Off Without You”, “Fresh” and my personal favorite “Ghost Train“. The band’s name might imply a hot August day crushing on your camp counselor, but these tracks are good enough for any season! Besides, how cute are married musical duos!?

In all seriousness, ever since my good friend Mike introduced me to them, I’ve been hooked. There are few bands that came out in the last few years that I am not sick of and that has to mean something. Everyone I make listen to one of their songs goes absolutely nuts and ends up buying their music on iTunes. They are THAT good!
