The Spark

The Spark: Friday March 28th, 2014

Welcome to The Spark, a feature on AltWire where we put the spotlight on fun, exciting and electrifying bands that we feel deserve your undivided attention. All available for immediate consumption and in satisfying servings for your cerebral taste buds. Fast food for your ears, what could be better then that?

SOUQ – Aveiro, Portugal (Independent)

What happens when you combine elements of psychedelic rock, ska, blues and jazz into one band? SOUQ are the answer. Featuring a very unique, and highly conceptual sound, SOUQ intrigued us from the early get go, and while they’ve been around since 2009, we feel their latest release “At La Brava – Volume Two Of Red Desert Saga” will be the album that officially puts them on the map. Beautifully constructed, engineered and full of unexpected twists and turns, this concept album is a strong argument for the power of independent artists &  labels and we look forward to seeing what the future will bring for this talented band.

Listen to the intro track “Desert Snake Catcher” below, and purchase their album here. SOUQ are currently managed and promoted through Monster Rock Booking.

Bruno Barreto – Bass
Bruno Tavares – Vocals
Jorge Loura – Guitars & Vocals
Jorge Oliveira – Drums & Percussion
Paulo Gravato – All Saxophones
Rui Bandeira – Trombone

Landmine – Palo Alto, CA (Independent)

Friends since high school and performing for many years before entering college, band members Parth Relan, Daniel Bortner, and Alex Vahidsafa formed Landmine in 2013, as a way to release their music to the world. Despite living apart and being spread throughout different areas of California for school, Landmine creates most of their music via the internet, sending files back and forth, getting together during school breaks to put the finishing touches on their music before releasing it via digital means. They currently have their debut EP “Rising Sun” available for free download, and you can listen to it below as well as download here.

God Damn – England, UK (Independent)

File this band name under “most accurate band name ever”, as “God Damn!” And “Holy sh**!” are likely the four words you’ll find yourself exclaiming after witnessing this band’s brilliant blend of Bleach era Nirvana, and Jimi-Hendrix style psychedelic rock. It’s Nirvana if Kurt dropped acid with Jimi, and time traveled back to the 1960s. Unleashing their fury through pure unadulterated rock and roll, and performing with a take no prisoners attitude God Damn’s guitar riffs spit in your face, and then ask kindly if you’d be interested in seconds.

Loud, nasty, and “Grungepunkthrashmetalnoisesludgecore” as Cack Blabbath so accurately put it, duo Thom Edward and Ash Weaver unleash a sound that would make her Majesty blush. To this music, we just have two words to say: God damn!

Say Lou Lou – Australia/Sweden (Self Released – à Deux)

Hailing out of both Australia and Sweden; Say Lou Lou, are currently hard at work on preparing their yet to be titled debut record for release later this year through their own label à Deux.

Comprised of twin sisters Electra and Miranda Kilbey, Say Lou Lou released their breakout single “Fool of Me” in 2013, and were featured on Billboard and “MTV Buzzworthy” with their track receiving over 120,000 plays in the two weeks following it’s initial release last year.
